Description
Moonrise over Cojata Peru
New Year’s Eve-Peru
Camping on Cojata village outskirts.
Moonrise over Andes-Too bright to sleep-
Bolivian Frontier is silent.
Burros graze in staked out circle.
I crawl out of blue tent lit up by
Quicksilver luminosity,
Breathing the thin, brittle air.
I must draw these surreal peaks sharp as crystals
Against incandescent sky.
My colors are all different in
Nocturnal brilliance.
Old men cacti in their wooly garments
Shimmer like snow fields across the altiplano.
It’s been a seven day trek
Over dizzying Inca highways
And ancient trails over rugged ridges-
So remote yet never really alone.
I include this night into my little
Book of treasured places
And intrepid moments
Which sometimes waxes
Into words-Sometimes poetic
Often prose-full.
Never enough-So I must paint the spectacles.
Now I can rest in sleeping bag slumber
As the moon-She carries on without me.
