Description
HIGHWAY SOLITAIRE
Cadmium sunflowers colonnade along the highway-
Lavender in long light-Western sun dancing through vergas-
Diagonal splinters cross-hatching the sky-A rainbows smiles in response-
Smeared down from heaven to prairie horizon-
Here is where I pause- Meadow lark song-here is where time stands still-
Somewhere in the wide-wonderful west-Somewhere in northern New Mexico-
This beauty above me-Beauty below me-
Buffaloes lying at rest as lightning plays to the north-
Antelope graze serenely along the roadside-
Red tail hawk rests on low rock-
Scarlet paintbrush is my friend-In this highway solitaire I rename them:
“Flame Flower,” “Torch Flower,” “Fire Flower,” “Pentecost Plant.”
I revel in the bliss of vast expanses-I breathe in the petrichor and am content,
Before I take the slow way west into the hazy blue mountains, small adobe villages,
And home.
